Delightfully Dark Art

Lately, I have been making some wonderfully unexpected art discoveries during google searches. First, it was the work of Arnaud de Vallois while googling dark fairy tales, then, a few days ago, I stumbled upon the illustrations of Ken Turner during a search for Tim Burton's upcoming film, Dark Shadows. As you can see above, his blog has the coolest banner, incorporating elements from Beetlejuice, Georges Melies', Le Voyage dans la lune, Frankenstein, and Dracula. There's even a Jack-o'-Lantern for good measure.

Anyway, it was my google search that led me, serendipitously, to a series of fabulous caricatures which Ken had produced based on some of the characters from the Dark Shadows movie. I've shared them above and they include, from left to right, Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins, Helena Bonham Carter as Dr Julia Hoffman, Jonny Lee Miller as Roger Collins, and Eva Green as Angelique Bouchard.

Catwoman and Penguin

Not only was I immediately taken with Ken's illustrative style from the moment I set eyes upon his work, but after taking a quick peek at his Twitter bio (below), I discovered that we share the same creative heroes:
Filmmaker/Animator/Illustrator - Inspirations: Tim Burton, Ronald Searle, Edward Gorey and Charles Addams.

Vincent Price and Peter Lorre

I have only featured just a few of my favourite illustrations here, but there's plenty more to see if you visit the Ken Turner blog.
